Computer Terms

Have you ever heard a "techie" speak and not know what they were talking about? Do you wish that someone would explain just what those terms like "MB" and "RAM" mean? When someone says "You get 5MB of space in your 1.2 Ghz machine with an AGP video card and a NIC card" do you just tune them out?

Well no more! We want you to understand the terms used in the field of technology so you can have a better understanding of what these terms mean to you and your business.

We can take care of the extremely technical problems, but having some understanding of what we are talking about can be extremely helpful. After all, no one knows your business like you do. And understanding some of these terms just a bit more can help you help your business.

Just click on one of the terms below to see an explanation in plain English of the technical term.

1) MB
2) kb
3) byte
4) RAM
5) Networking

1) MB

MB is short for "Megabyte". It is approximately 1000 Kb (1024 kb to be exact). It was common for hard drives to be measured in terms of MB until bigger hard drives came about. In many instances the amount of RAM available on a machine is expressed in MB.

2) kb

Kb is short for "kilobyte". It is approximately 1000 bytes (1024 bytes to be exact). So what does this mean to you? Well one common way kb impacts people is when they are making a web site. In general pictures can take up anywhere between 5-100 kb, depending on their size. Web pages also tend to be in that range, although pictures on web sites are usually smaller in size than normal because of web loading time. The bottom line is the smaller a web page is (the smaller number of kb the page is) the quicker it loads.

3) byte

a byte is the smallest unit of data that is measured in modern computers. One byte is generally used to represent small amounts of data, such as a letter. One letter or number or symbol typed on the keyboard will take up 1 byte of space in the computer. Practically most people won't have any direct use in measuring bytes.

4) RAM

RAM is short for Random Access Memory, and is typically measured in MB. Put simply, it is what your computer "remembers" while it is turned on. So if you start a program, that program is loaded into RAM. The amount of RAM you have dictates how many simultaneous programs you can have running at a time. This is different from Hard Drive space, which can hold many more programs than can be run all at once.

5) Networking

Networking is the process of making different computers communicate with each other. What this means is that information on one computer can be seen and possibly accessed by another computer. This is commonly seen in work environments where computers are connected through corporate intranets. What this means is that the computers can "talk to" each other and transfer data without the data having to be saved on a floppy disk or CD-ROM. The most common example of networking is the Internet. Once you connect your computer to the internet, it is a part of a world wide network.
